Adding proposed new courses DNP 881, DNP 882, DNP 883, and DNP 884 for Post Master's DNP specialization is founded on course evaluation student feedback, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) faculty curriculum revision feedback, and Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation standards based on the new American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials (2021) which outlines the necessary curriculum content and expected competencies of graduates from DNP programs.
Having four separate practicum courses, each with a different number and name, would enhance and clarify curriculum content and expected competencies. Additionally, each proposed new course (DNP 881, 882, 883, 884) would be pass/fail with the pass/fail grade entered immediately after the completion of each course. Currently, students take DNP 896 course one, two, and three for which a grade of X (demonstrating progress) is earned. When the student successfully completes the fourth DNP 896 course, a grade of P may be entered for the fourth DNP 896 course. Faculty then need to go back into myNKU and generate a change grade request that goes through workflow for the grade of X to be changed to Pass (P) for each of the three previous DNP 896 courses.
The intent is for Post Master’s DNP students in DNP 896 to transition into DNP 881, 882, 883, or 884 depending on placement in the DNP course sequence. The current DNP 896 and DNP 897 courses will remain for transition purposes and in the event that current DNP 896 students need to repeat one of the DNP 896 courses or need extra completion time after the fourth DNP 896 course, necessitating the need for DNP 897.
The total number of hours required for students to satisfy program requirements remain the same (35-36).
